House swap changes life
Just an hour a day keeps the dust at bay since Knowsley resident Barbara White swapped homes in a new scheme.
Fifty nine year old Barbara was living in a three bedroom house in North Huyton but health problems were making it difficult for her to get around.
She talked over her situation with the housing options service and she’s now in a one bedroom bungalow in a quiet close.
“It’s absolutely brilliant,” said Barbara, whose move to the house in Prescot took just six weeks from start to finish.
“I love it – I should’ve done this years ago, but didn’t think I could.
“It’s much easier for me to get around as there are no stairs and I can clean up in just an hour, so I can keep on top of everything.
“I feel like I’ve moved into a different world – Knowsley Housing Trust even sends someone to cut the grass so I don’t even have to worry about that!”
The move was arranged as part of a Government backed project to make sure the needs of people in social housing match the property they are in.
The project is aimed at both overcrowding and under occupation.
In Knowsley, the council operates the scheme with Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT) and other registered social landlords.
Barbara moved from one KHT property to another.
She said: “When a property first became available I didn’t feel ready to move.
“But it gave me the kick start to get sorted and when the next house became free I was all set.”
The project has been running for a year and several other people have downsized to more manageable properties while families suffering overcrowding have been rehoused into bigger properties.
“This makes sense for everyone,” said Cllr Dave Lonergan, Knowsley’s cabinet member for regeneration, economy and skills.
“People often struggle on in accommodation that no longer meets their needs but they don’t have to.
“It’s just a question of contacting the team and discussing what options might be available.”

Aguas Calientes is the nearest town to Machu Picchu and is used either as the starting or end point of a trip to the Lost City of the Incas at Machu Picchu. It's an interesting place, having it's cultural sensibilities seriously challenged by the need to generate income from tourism. Every nationality you can imagine flies into Cusco, then walks the trail or travels by rail to get here. There are fresh faced, clean pressed people 'popping by' for a day trip, those who have just arrived in the country hoping for a 'quick fix' of Inca Culture and are suffering so badly from altitude sickness it is all they can do to make it to a cafe and sit there nursing their sore heads and empty stomachs with sunglasses and cocoa tea. Then there are those, (of which I was one!) who are smelly, and sweaty and triumphant - who arrive there having hiked the trail for days and finally experienced Machu Picchu. For us, Aguas Calientes was exactly as the name implies - a chance finally for a hot shower! We stayed in the original station building which is now a guest house and I was so tired, the trains didn't bother me at all - In fact I found these trains rather endearing. I loved the life happening alongside the track and the rickety, tumbledown feel of the place.
